Member Spotlight: Lisa Maciejewski-West, Gold Star Medical Business Services

Lisa Maciejewski-West, CMC, CMOM, CMIS, CPRO-I, has been involved in chiropractic billing, management, and consulting since 1982.  Starting out as a front desk chiropractic assistant, Lisa moved through the ranks to become a CA biller, chiropractic technician, and a chiropractic office manager. In 1999, Lisa started working for Kats Management (now called Integrity Management) as a full-time practice coach and speaker. During her 10-year stint with Kats Management, she coached more than 190 providers and their staff to success, and taught CA, billing and office management courses at Kats/Integrity conferences an average of 20 times per year.

In 2006, Lisa founded Gold Star Medical Business Services to provide a part-time job for her then-disabled husband. Upon his death in 2009, Lisa took over running Gold Star full-time. The company currently serves 150+ practices, providing outsource billing, compliance, credentialing and practice management consulting services for chiropractors and medical offices nationwide.

Lisa is a certified Medical Coder, Medical Insurance Specialist, Medical Office Manager, Medical Auditor, and Certified Professional Compliance Officer, as well as a CPCO Instructor with the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).  Lisa has given billing, coding, compliance, and credentialing courses to more than 65 state, district, local and private chiropractic and medical organizations and associations throughout the world.

In 2022 and 2023, Lisa and her team led several focus groups at the American Medical Billing Association’s (AMBA) national conference in Las Vegas and she was a keynote speaker at the event in 2025. Lisa also serves on the National Advisory Board of AMBA.

Lisa has been actively involved in the Chiro Congress. In 2023, she launched a National Insurance Help Desk with Chiro Congress that provides state association members with advice and guidance in chiropractic coding, billing, compliance, and credentialing. As of 2025, 21 state associations are using the Help Desk as a unique value-added member benefit. Lisa also supports the profession as a member of the Chiropractic Future Strategic Plan’s Chiropractic Technical Committee.

In 2023, Lisa was appointed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to serve on the Board of the Texas State Office of Risk Management, which overwatches the Texas Workers’ Compensation Fund and other auto and property insurance plans for state employees and state-owned vehicles and buildings. Lisa serves as Vice Chair of the SORM Board.

Lisa is the proud mom of five children and “Yaya” to seven grandchildren.

How long have you been a TCA Official Partner and why did you become involved with TCA?

I’ve been a TCA partner for 4 years, but I’ve been working with TCA members for almost 30!

What is your favorite TCA event and why?

This spring, I attended and participated in the TCA legislative day in Austin. It was truly inspiring to see over 250 doctors and Chiropractic supporters converge on the Capitol to make their voices heard.

How did you get involved with the chiropractic community and why do you enjoy working with chiropractors?

I started working in the chiropractic field in 1982, when I took what I thought was a temporary job as a fill in CA for a chiropractor in New York City. I was immediately impressed with the quality of care he gave his patients, and the “chiropractic miracles” I got to witness every day.  The more I learned about chiropractic, the more committed I became!  I am personally committed to a wholistic approach to medicine, and chiropractic care, in my opinion is the Flagship of wholistic care.

What’s the biggest mistake that you see chiropractors make and how can they avoid it in the future?

Yeesh, I think it's going to get a little heavy here......I think the biggest mistake Chiropractors make are actually within their own ranks.  There are literally hundreds of chiropractic techniques and a handful of "major" chiropractic philosophies. You have the Straight Practitioners who focus primarily on treating the subluxation and don't believe in ancillary procedures such as rehab, acupuncture, etc,. Mixer Chiropractors who believe in a balance of chiropractic, PT, and ancillary services, Atlas Orthoganist Practitioners, Activator Practitioners, etc.  I've been treated by all of these types of practitioners in my 43 years in the profession, and all of them worked!  It's a little like Christianity....different religions believe in Jesus but the way the worship may be different from each other.  You don't have to be of one particular religion to get to heaven, no more than you have to be of one particular Chiropractic Philosophy to see miraculous results in patients.  And yet these groups with different philosophies will often spend (in my humble opinion), unnecessary time arguing their position with each other, sometimes to the point that the general public and patients will become confused and disenchanted with Chiropractic.  Some states actually have different State Associations based on the different Chiropractic Philosophies, even to the National Level (ACA/ICA).  And as a result it becomes more difficult to get funding and support to push legislation for parity with the medical profession.  There's been a saying floating around the profession for years that "Chiropractors eat their Young", and sadly there's still too much truth in that statement.  Until the profession can come together with respect, and embrace and celebrate the diversity of the Profession, we will always be weaker than we should.

What is the Insurance Help Desk with the Chiro Congress and TCA and how can it help Texas chiropractors?

The insurance Help Desk is a member benefit that I developed and created in partnership with the Chiropractic Congress of State Associations, aka ChiroCongress.  This is being used Nationally by over 20 state associations to provide free Insurance Billing, Revenue Cycle Management and Compliance guidance to their members.  A link is placed on the State Association Website that providers and CA's can click on to submit a question or problem they are having in any of these categories.  The messages come directly to my company, Gold Star Medical Business Services, and I personally answer 98% of the helpdesk questions.  Occasionally one of my Certified staff members will answer if I'm unavailable.  We are not AI Bots!! Our goal is to answer the questions and provide needed resources within 2-3 business days.  For more information about how to access the HelpDesk, contact the TCA at Phone: 512-477-9292 or email info@chirotexas.org

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know about you?

Here's three....1.  I am a classically trained singer who got my degree in Classical Voice from the Manhattan School of Music.  2.  I'm also foreign born (Greece) and bilingual.  3.  I can drive a stick shift.
