Chiropractic has been a lifelong journey for Jenna Hardin Hillman, DC. At an early age, Dr. Hillman was constantly bombarded with ear infections and urinary tract infections; she grew up jumping from one antibiotic to another. As a third-grader, she was diagnosed with ADD, was placed on the highest dose of Ritalin the FDA allowed, and battled the side effects for five years. When a chiropractor began treating her and her family, he educated them not only on the harmful effects of Ritalin, but the global effects chiropractic has on the body. Inspired by the life changes chiropractic had on her and her family, she decided to become a chiropractor. Dr. Hillman grew up just across the state line in Lovington, New Mexico, and attended New Mexico State University, graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science and a minor in Chemistry. As a NMSU student, she entered and won the title of Miss New Mexico in 2004 and competed in the Miss USA pageant in Hollywood, California, advancing to the semifinals. During her reign as Miss New Mexico, Dr. Hillman was an advocate for children with disabilities, school programs, and health, and she continued to advocate for children with disabilities following her reign. While working for Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, Dr. Hillman learned American Sign Language. She also worked in Washington, DC, as a staffer for Senator Pete Domenici. During her stint as a Capitol Hill staffer, she was inspired by the positive role government can play and how advocacy is so necessary. Later, Dr. Hillman attended Parker University and graduated in December 2008, focusing her extra time on subjects such as nutrition, pediatrics, laser therapies and modalities, and animal chiropractic. While at Parker, she lobbied on behalf of chiropractic on Capitol Hill with the Parker Student American Chiropractic Associaton. Not long after becoming a doctor of chiropractic, Dr. Hillman joined the Texas Chiropractic Association Board of Directors in 2014, where she proudly served as the District 3 State Director for nine years. Dr. Hillman received her Certificate from the Academy of Family Practice in 2020 and is one of the few Lubbock female chiropractors certified in Webster Technique through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). Dr. Hillman married her longtime friend, Travis Hillman, in January 2011. Together, they have three wonderful children, Charlee, Quaid, and Stevi, along with a handful of critters. How did you first learn about TCA and why do you think every Texas chiropractor should be a TCA member? When I was in school, I was involved with SACA (Student American Chiropractic Association). Having worked as an intern on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, I was passionate to go back to my old stomping grounds and see my old colleagues and show them what chiropractic was all about. At the time, I don’t recall a large presence or student involvement for the Texas Chiropractic Association. I am very thankful that student involvement is evolving at TCA, and we are seeing more presence as students work towards their degrees. I joined TCA in 2014 and was immediately called upon to serve. I didn’t quite know what I was getting myself into, but I was up for the challenge to serve my profession and give back to something that has given me so much. While it’s easy to get your degree and start your career, DCs need to realize that there are many impactful moments, many within the walls of the Texas Legislature, that directly impact our ability to serve the public to the capacity we are trained in. If you aren’t willing to stand up and share the positive impact chiropractic can have on the public, then who will? The Texas Chiropractic Association represents a collaborative effort of doctors of chiropractic, from all over the state, who serve people differently. While we may not have similar ways of serving the public and empowering patients to seek a connected, holistic, drug-free lifestyle, at the end of the day, we all serve humbly. What TCA member benefit do you find most valuable? I truly value the friendship and mentorship I have gained along the way by being a TCA member. The strong network of referrals allows patients to continue their care with colleagues we trust. Tell us what some of your goals and visions are for the Public Relations/Communications Committee? My first goal is to continue the good work that was done before me by my predecessor, Dr. Andrew Oteo. I want to connect the public with some of the miracle stories that we as chiropractor’s witness on a regular basis. I want to continue to make sure the chiropractors of Texas know how the TCA is fighting to protect and preserve our rights to practice chiropractic in this great state, whether they are a TCA member or not. What is most exciting about volunteering in this leadership role? I’m excited to have people share their miracle stories. I’m excited to inspire the public to see how chiropractic can bring hope and change their lives for the better. What’s your biggest professional accomplishment so far? That’s a difficult question to answer!! Opening a successful practice has been an accomplishment I’m very proud of. I’m also very proud to have served as the District 3 State Director on the TCA Board of Directors for nine years. What’s something about you (a fun fact) few people know about you? Some know this about me, but I became an accidental “beauty queen." with zero experience, thanks to a wrong number. After striking up a conversation with the directors of the Miss New Mexico pageant, they insisted I enter. I was crowned Miss New Mexico, USA in 2004 and made it to the top 15 contestants in the Miss USA. What hobbies or interests do you have outside of chiropractic? I love all things about being a mama to my three children. I love traveling and hope one day to spend more time experiencing and exploring this beautiful world! I have too many things I love to do honestly. I am always looking for a new adventure or hobby.
