Karen Campion, DC, CCSP, is a licensed chiropractor in Texas and Colorado. She is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner and a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. While Dr. Campion retired after selling her practice in College Station in February 2021, she remains active in the chiropractic community. Dr. Campion was recently elected as president of the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards after stints as District IV Director and Board Chair for FCLB. Dr. Campion also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Prior to that, she served seven years on the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners. A graduate of Texas Chiropractic College, Dr. Campion is a long-time TCA member and has won the Keeler Plaque and H. Ford Johnson Membership Award, two of the TCA’s biggest honors. Dr. Campion is married to Jeff Brown, DC, a TCA Past President and retired chiropractor. How long have you been a TCA member and why did you join TCA? I was a TCA member as a student while attending Texas Chiropractic College and have been a general member since my graduation in December of 1989. What is your favorite thing about being a TCA member? I love the Chiro Texpo convention and the great educational programs TCA provides where I can get all my required CE hours. I love to network with friends and fellow DCs and get caught up on what is happening in our state. You’ve served on the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners and now the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards. Why did you decide to get involved in these state and national groups? I wanted to give back to the profession and had service in my heart. Next thing I knew, I got a call from the Governor’s office asking if I would like to serve on TBCE. I served from May 2011 to November 2018. I got involved with FCLB as an alternate delegate around 2013 and found the information was very valuable in regulation. I was able to share this information with the executive director, Texas board members, and office staff. This gave us a picture of how other states in the U.S. handled regulatory issues that might be of assistance to our board. What are your main goals as President of the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards and what do you have to achieve in your role? My vision for the FCLB is to continue growing our PACE program to support the quality of continuing education for our member boards’ licensees and secure the financial independence of the FCLB. I will continue to work on strengthening the Certified Chiropractic Clinical Assistant (CCCA) program, CIN-BAD, and board training for good governance. In addition, I will work with the committees on updating the bylaws, the Model Practice Act (MPA), and the Board of Directors policies and procedures where needed. I attended the Chiropractic Summit meeting at the Florida Chiropractic Association’s conference in August 2022 in Orlando. I was able to meet with the leadership present on Chiropractic Specialties topic and got valuable input for our Chiropractic Specialty program development. My work as the chair of the Chiropractic Specialty Task Force for the FCLB has proven my ability to coordinate efforts, manage projects, show consistent progress, and deliver results. I will continue to work towards successful collaboration within the FCLB and other national organizations. I believe if we have a common Purpose, good Processes, and dedicated People – We can do GREAT things together! I have always worked as a professional with an outward mindset (listening to others’ points of view with an open mind and not predetermining the outcome prior to that), considering and welcoming different perspectives and ideas that make goal-setting collaborative, and, ultimately, the outcome becomes more efficient and impactful. Who has been the biggest influence in your chiropractic career? There are so many things here. Being a patient at age 20 started me thinking that maybe I could make a career out of this profession. It was very positive & impactful to my athletic endeavors at the time. From here, my career choice changed to actively pursuing a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from TCC from a medical x-ray & MRI technician. Fast forward to today and looking back on things, my family and my husband (TCA Past President Jeff Brown) supporting my career choices and decisions in continuing to serve the profession are the biggest influences in my chiropractic career. They sacrificed our family time to allow me to serve our profession in Texas and at the national level with FCLB and NBCE. What is your top professional accomplishment so far? 1. Being selected by my fellow TBCE board members and peers to be the fact witness for TBCE in the matter of TMA vs TBCE lawsuit in 2017. I testified in the Travis County District Court in Austin on diagnosis and using the word “nerve” in our board rules. 2. Being the FCLB representative in Texas Amicus Brief with NBCE to the Supreme Court of Texas on the diagnosis and nerve issue. The best part is we got a court decision in our favor on January 29, 2021, to protect the right of Texas chiropractors to diagnose and treat nerves. It was a BIG VICTORY for us all. 3. Receiving the H. Ford Johnson Membership Award from TCA in 2016 at Chiro Texpo. 4. Receiving the Keeler Plaque from TCA in 2022 at the annual convention for meritorious service to chiropractic in the State of Texas. This is a lifetime achievement award that commemorates the Texas Chiropractor of the Year. It is truly one of the highlights of my career, and I get the privilege of presenting the 2023 Keeler Plaque at the President’s Gala during Chiro Texpo on June 23-25 in Dallas. What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know about you? I was born in a small coal mining town in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, where Yuengling beer originated, and I played the bagpipe in my high school all-girl kilt band! I also compete with my husband in West Coast Swing dancing events.
