January Member Spotlight: Dr. Marcia Garcia-Mouhon

Marcia Garcia-Mouhon, DC, is a Houston-based and Webster- and FMT-certified doctor of chiropractic, a DOT doctor and FMCSA Certified Medical Examiner. Following in the footsteps of her father, Jesus E. Garcia, Dr. Garcia-Mouhon brings her passion and decades-long experience in customer service to her career as a chiropractor. She is a proud member of the Texas Chiropractic Association, American Chiropractic Association, and International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. She and her husband, TJ, enjoy 5K runs, exercising in Hermann Park, and ballroom dancing.

Why did you join TCA?

Being a TCA member was instilled in me since I was a child. My father is a TCA member and has been for at least 40 years. I joined because TCA has been part of our extended family and has always been there anytime we would have any questions. On top of that, who doesn’t love great perks of joining such as Office Depot discounts on ink, paper, and more? Most importantly, I love the camaraderie of belonging to an organization that has the same end goal in mind, and that is helping defend the scope of practice of all Texas chiropractors.

As a young chiropractor, what is the biggest benefit of being a TCA member?

One of the biggest benefits of being a TCA member is having access to a pool of mentors who have been in the game long before I have. It is important to learn from those who came before us, so we do not have to face the same struggles along the way. Most importantly, by being a TCA member, you now have an extended family for life, and family is everything.

Why did you get involved as a TCA district leader and a member of a state committee?

It is such a great honor to be a TCA district leader and a member of NextGen DCs Committee. I love being involved with both, because I get to be a part of giving back to our communities, bringing awareness about drug-free, non-invasive treatments chiropractic has to offer. In addition, it gives me much joy going on the TCC campus seeing students, for they are our future and our future leaders. It’s always nice seeing familiar faces and sharing my stories just recently having been in their seats just 1 ½ years ago.

Why are you attending TCA Legislative Day and the Texas Chiropractic Legislative Conference in February and why should every Texas chiropractor be there?

I am beyond excited to be attending TCA Legislative Day (February 16) and Texas Chiropractic Legislative Conference (February 17-18) in Austin. Legislative Day is a huge day for many, but for me, I know that this is not a day I can miss. This is when we go to the State Capitol, the day we stand united as one for all chiropractors in Texas, and we go and meet our representatives and senators to have them hear our voice. Legislative Day is the day that we are part of history and help pave the way for our profession and for our future. There is a saying my grandfather would tell us time and time again: “hijitos, recuerden mantenganse Unidos, Siempre Adelante!”  I have carried that with me my whole life and truly believe his advice to always remain united and moving forward, for United, We Can!  TCLC is a plus because not only will I get the opportunity to be part of such an exciting day as Legislative Day, but the next two days, I get to spend time with my extended family and knock out some CE credits all with one stone.

What’s your top professional accomplishment so far?

Being a TCA district leader and part of the NextGen DCs Committee has definitely been the highlight. There are not enough words to express what an honor it is to be involved with TCA and advocating for our wonderful profession.

What New Year’s resolution did you make this year?

I have a few resolutions, but this will be my year of self-growth, self-love, and living a healthier life. I feel as doctors we are constantly giving to others and, in the process, we at times neglect ourselves along the way. So, this year I made my resolution to dedicate time to working out more often, whether it be going to the gym to lifting weights, going for a jog, taking a yoga class, or ball room dancing, you name it, I just want to move more. I also started doing daily journaling to set daily, monthly, and yearly goals. The reason I started journaling is so I can be more intentional and, if I see and read my goals daily, then I am more likely to actually reach them. Another goal is to read more.  I already listen to daily motivational videos but now I would like to expand that by reading hardback/paperback. There’s nothing like holding a book in one’s hand and a highlighter in the other. I want to expand my knowledge so I can be able to share it with others. Most importantly, I want to practice what I preach and set a great example  for my patients, family, and others.
