TCA is happy to announce its July Member Spotlight: Dr. Karen Campion Brown! A 1989 graduate from Texas Chiropractic College (TCC), she has specialties as a Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner, is a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture and has been in practice in College Station since 1989. Prior to attending TCC, Dr. Campion was a registered Medical Radiologic Technologist and worked at several hospitals in Houston. She also ran outpatient imaging centers in both Houston and College Station as a Chief Technologist. Dr. Campion has always been involved with TCA at a local level in her community by coordinating local chiropractors in fundraising efforts for the state reps in her district to promote chiropractic in Texas. She was appointed by Governor Perry to the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners from 2011–2018 and was Vice President from 2016-2018. While serving on the Board, she served and chaired the Enforcement and Rules committees. Dr. Campion was the fact witness for the TBCE in the TMA vs TBCE lawsuit in District court in Austin, which she was instrumental in putting back into evidence the facts on “diagnosis” which ultimately ended up at the Supreme Court of Texas. On January 29, 2021, the Supreme Court of Texas judgment was a win for TBCE on all counts for Chiropractic in Texas. From the experience on TBCE, Dr. Campion ran and was elected District IV Director of the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Board, a position she currently continues to hold. In 2021 and 2022, she was elected Board Chair of the FCLB, chairs the Recognized Chiropractic Specialty Program and is a member of the Policies and Procedures Committee and Model Practice Act. Recently retired as of February 25, 2021, she still maintains an active license and is a Sports Performance Specialist for the Texas A and M University women’s golf team. She has been married to her husband, Jeffrey L. Brown, DC, for 11 years and the couple resides in Bryan, Texas. How long have you been a TCA member and what’s your favorite event? I have been a full time TCA member since 1989. My favorite TCA event is the annual convention. I also enjoy the District 8 meetings where we can network with friends and share ideas about the chiropractic profession in Texas and serving our patients better. How do you define success? Success is being part of something bigger than oneself, helping an organization to meet worthy goals, to bring some value to the community/organization. Success is the ability to do your best every day in all roles you have in life - both professionally and personally - and getting positive outcomes. What’s your biggest (or one of your biggest) professional accomplishment(s) so far? My biggest professional accomplishment so far would have to be winning the Keeler Award at the 2022 TCA Texpo! So very honored and humbled to be recognized by my peers for all of my contributions to the Chiropractic profession in the State of Texas. Unbelievable evening with a room full of great friends to share this tremendous honor! If you could choose anyone as a mentor, who would you choose? My maternal grandmother, Margaret Siney Conroy (aka “Nana”) had five children and was born in 1909. She put herself through Kutztown Teachers State College in Pennsylvania and became a principal in 1929. She had a great influence on my life regarding my early education and was an inspiration to me as a young girl. My “Nana” was a good listener, knowledgeable, nonjudgmental, honest and candid. She did not let me get away with very much either! Tough in a loving way! I feel very blessed to have had her in my life until she passed in 1986. I believe she would be very proud of the person I am today! When you’re not working, how do you enjoy spending your time? When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Jeff Brown, our Shih Tzu dog, Cooper, and I love to play golf at least two to three times per week, if possible. I also enjoy fly fishing and riding 4-wheelers in the Colorado Mountains. I enjoy classic cars that go FAST! What’s something about you (a fun fact) not many people know? A fun fact about me that most people may not know is that I used to play the bagpipes in an all-girl, 24-member high school piper band from Pottsville Area High School (PA) 1974-1977. What was the first concert you ever attended? The first concert I every attended was ZZ top in Allentown, PA. What characteristic do you admire most in others? Learning from highly successful people, humility, loyalty, accountability, resiliency, honesty, respect for others, compassion for others, integrity, generosity and gratitude.
