We’ve entered the final month of the 86th Texas Legislative Session, which ends on May 27. The coming 20 days will be the most important of the session and will determine whether TCA’s priorities become law. Early last week, TCA’s top priority, SB 1867 by Sen. Chuy Hinojosa (clarifying the role of nerves in chiropractic), was heard in the Senate Health and Human Services Committee. The hearing was a great success! Neurologist Paul Harris, MD, and Parker University President William Morgan, DC, testified along with TCA President Devin Pettiet, DC, and Bruce Shotts, DC, of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners) in support of the bill, making a strong case for its passage and rebutting the opposition. You can watch the testimony online, with TCA testimony at the 36:39 mark and additional supporting testimony at 1:57:06. TCA is hopeful the bill will receive a favorable vote this week. TCA’s other legislative priorities are moving, too! SB 1739 by Sen. Jose Menendez (prohibiting discrimination against chiropractors by insurers) passed the Senate last week, and its House companion, HB 1410 by Rep. Eddie Lucio III, is expected to pass the House this week. HB 741 by Rep. Yvonne Davis (which would inform injured workers of their right to choose a chiropractor) passed the House last week. HB 201 by Rep. Phil Stephenson (which would add a chiropractor to the state’s Combative Sports Advisory Board). HB 2151 by Rep. Sergio Muñoz Jr. (which would eliminate extrapolation in post-payment insurance claims audits) are both scheduled for a vote on the House floor this week. Things are moving – and moving fast! We’re excited about the progress TCA’s legislative agenda has made so far, but we’ll need your engagement and support to help us get these priorities across the finish line. So please stay tuned for future calls to action!
