It’s crunch-time during the 86th Texas Legislative Session. While we’re making progress in advancing pro-chiropractic legislation, we still have plenty of work remaining over the final few weeks. TCA’s top priority is HB 2733, which would clarify the role of the nervous system in chiropractic. HB 2733 has been considered in the House Health Professions Subcommittee and is awaiting a vote by the full Public Health Committee. We are confident this measure has the support required to advance, but it has not been brought to a vote by the Committee Chairwoman, Rep. Senfronia Thompson. TCA members are encouraged to contact Rep. Thompson at (512) 463-0720 and Subcommittee Chairman Rep. J.D. Sheffield at (512) 463-0628 to encourage a timely vote on this critical bill. Please remember to be exceedingly polite! Both House and Senate versions of TCA’s bill to eliminate insurer discrimination against chiropractors (HB 1410 and SB 1739) have passed from their respective committees and are headed for floor consideration this week. After a minor difference between these bills is resolved, we anticipate final passage of this measure soon. This landmark bill will prevent insurance companies from refusing to pay chiropractors for in-scope therapies/modalities if the insurer would pay a physician or physical therapist for the same treatment. Four other TCA initiatives have cleared committee in the House and are expected to be considered by the full House in the coming weeks, including: HB 1866, which would limit initial prescriptions of opioids and encourage referrals to conservative care; HB 201, which would add a chiropractor to the state’s Combative Sports Advisory Board; HB 741, which would inform injured workers of their right to choose a chiropractor; and HB 2151, which would eliminate extrapolation in post-payment insurance claims audits After passing in the House of Representatives, these bills will be sent to the Senate for consideration. Five weeks from now, the 86th Texas Legislative Session will be drawing to a close. TCA’s lobby team is working overtime to ensure passage of these important bills. Please stay engaged for updates and possible calls to action! Check the Texas Chiropractic Association Facebook page regularly and look for emails or texts with more details.
