Last week, your TCA executive team represented Texas at the Chiro Congress Annual Convention in San Diego. In case you’re wondering, Chiro Congress is a national association comprised of state associations like the Texas Chiropractic Association. It’s where we go to learn how to make our associations stronger, get important state and national updates, and most importantly, be inspired. I was joined by our three other TCA executives – Vice President Dr. Mo Jahadi, Secretary/Treasurer Alayna Pagnani-Gendron and Executive Director Jeff Jenkins. In addition to celebrating Chiro Congress’ 50th anniversary with the rest of the chiropractic community, we spent time educating our peers about what is happening in Texas, listening, learning and networking with state and national associations, thought leaders and vendors. We worked hard and had a lot of fun. Here are a few of my observations: 1) Texas is unique – Well, I’m probably telling you something you already knew, but what is happening in the Lone Star State is unlike anywhere else. No other state is fighting multiple lawsuits (nerve in the Supreme Court of Texas, acupuncture in the Travis County District Court) and no other faces the constant pressure from its state’s medical association. It’s a fact! 2) We have lots of friends – In addition to pulling together our chiropractors to face these challenges, we need help from outside of Texas. That help is on its way, with organizations like the Chiro Congress, American Chiropractic Association, Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards, National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, Foundation for Chiropractic Progress and others on our side. It was exciting to see icons like Dr. Lou Sportelli telling our Texas story during Chiro Congress. They all know that, “what happens in Texas, won’t stay in Texas.” 3) We need a unified message – TCA participated in a Media Mastery Bootcamp, Future of Chiropractic Forum and dozens of meetings, and everyone seemed to agree there is a lack of clarity and consistency in the message we deliver to the general public, media and our elected officials. For the good of the profession, we must speak with one voice. It won’t be easy, but it must be a top priority. This week, TCA is participating in the Parker Legislative Summit in Dallas. Parker University President Dr. Bill Morgan has pulled together a coalition of state and national organizations to discuss and find solutions to the problems we face in Texas. The last time this happened – in 2016 – it was right before the 2017 Texas Legislative Session. I am sure you are aware of what transpired two years ago; TCA and Texas chiropractors enjoyed a record-setting legislative session, with multiple bills – including one that clarified your right to diagnose – signed into law. With every challenge is an opportunity to make our profession stronger. With more than 6,000 licensed chiropractors, Texas is a powerhouse in the making. Let’s do this together by being active and getting your colleagues involved! Chad Carpenter, DC TCA President
